If you're thinking about a Christmas break in northern Italy, Trento is well worth adding to your list. Over the festive season, its squares, streets and historic buildings fill with lights, wooden stalls and that Alpine atmosphere that makes even a simple walk feel like something special.

Trento's Christmas markets are also the perfect excuse to get to know the city and use it as a base for visiting some of the loveliest spots in Trentino.

In this article, we'll tell you what to see in Trento at Christmas, where to find the main markets and where to park if you're travelling by car. And if you want to get around the surrounding area at your own pace, we'll also give you a few tips for sorting out your car hire.

When Are the Trento Christmas Markets?

The Christmas season in Trento runs for several weeks. For 2026–2027, the markets are scheduled to take place from 20 November 2026 to 7 January 2027. The main stalls are spread across different parts of the historic centre, particularly around Piazza Fiera and Piazza Mostra.

Entry to the markets is free, and you'll find handmade crafts, Christmas decorations, local food and a range of other products from Trentino-Alto Adige.

And this is one of the big advantages of visiting Trento at this time of year: you don't have to stick to just browsing the stalls. You can combine the markets with a visit to the historic centre and, if you have a car, take a day trip or two into the surrounding area.

Trento Christmas Markets You Can’t Miss

Piazza Fiera: The Main Christmas Market

Piazza Fiera is one of the highlights of Christmas in Trento. Its traditional wooden stalls make for a particularly lovely scene alongside the city's old walls.

Here you'll find handmade crafts, local food, sweets, traditional drinks and plenty of ideas for something to take home as a reminder of your trip.

One of the best ways to enjoy it is to take your time. Wander between the stalls, try a local speciality and take the chance to explore the streets of the historic centre around the square.

Piazza Mostra and the Atmosphere in the Historic Centre

The Christmas programme also spreads to other parts of the centre, including Piazza Mostra. The atmosphere changes completely in the evening, once the lights come on.

Christmas in Trento isn't just about the markets: the decorations, Christmas trees and activities make walking around the city part of the experience.

And if you're travelling with family, you'll also find things aimed at children, as well as other activities and events held over the festive period.

What to See in Trento Besides the Markets

One of our tips is not to spend the whole day just at the markets. Trento has a small historic centre that you can easily explore on foot.

Piazza Duomo and the Cathedral of San Vigilio

Start your walk in Piazza Duomo, the heart of the city. This is where you'll find the Cathedral of San Vigilio, one of Trento's main landmarks.

At Christmas, the square becomes even more of a focal point thanks to the decorations and festive atmosphere. It's also a good place to start exploring the streets of the old town.

Castello del Buonconsiglio

Another must-see is the Castello del Buonconsiglio, one of the most important sights in Trento.

Although you can visit it all year round, the setting has a special charm in winter. If you have time, it's worth including in your route to see its courtyards, rooms and gardens.

The Streets of the Historic Centre

Part of Trento's appeal lies in simply wandering around its streets. You'll come across palaces, decorated facades, small shops and squares that take on a really special atmosphere at Christmas.

Where to Park in Trento During the Christmas Markets

This is probably one of the questions we ask ourselves most when driving to a European city in peak season.

Our advice is simple: don't try to park right in the historic centre. At Christmas there's more traffic, and you'll also need to pay close attention to the restricted traffic zones.

The most practical option is to leave the car in a car park a reasonable distance from the centre and walk the rest of the way.

One option to consider is the Area Ex Italcementi, which, according to recent reports from travellers, is around a ten-minute walk from the centre. Another alternative is the Autosilo Buonconsiglio, a covered car park close to the centre.

Before you travel, we always recommend checking the latest conditions, opening times and prices for each car park, especially if you're visiting Trento at the busiest times of year.

What If You Arrive by Train?

If you've chosen to travel to Trento by train and want to hire a car to continue your trip around Trentino, you can do that too.

Is It Worth Hiring a Car to Visit Trento at Christmas?

Being able to leave the city whenever you like means you can plan a much more flexible route and visit small villages and other Christmas markets in the region.

From Trento, you can also plan day trips to places such as Levico Terme, Rovereto or various mountain towns. In fact, some of the best-known Christmas markets in Trentino are outside the city.

Tips for Hiring a Car in Trento

At Christmas, especially if your travel dates are already fixed, we recommend comparing prices in advance.

Don't just look at the daily rate. Before you book, check the fuel policy, excess, deposit, included mileage and the rental company's terms and conditions.

In our guide on how to find cheap car hire in Italy, you'll find more tips for bringing down the final cost of your booking.

There's another important thing to bear in mind in Trento: the size of the car. If you're going to be driving on mountain roads and parking in towns or villages, a compact car can be much easier to handle than a large one.

A Christmas Break That Goes Well Beyond the Markets

The Christmas markets are Trento's main draw, but we think it would be a mistake to stop at the stalls.

The mix of mountains, architecture, food, lights and festive atmosphere makes Trento a very well-rounded break. You can spend a morning exploring the historic centre, the afternoon browsing the stalls in Piazza Fiera and Piazza Mostra, and end the day enjoying the city's Christmas lights.

And if you have a few days, a hire car will let you extend your trip considerably and discover other parts of Trentino.

So, if you're looking for a different Italian city to spend Christmas in, Trento deserves a place on your itinerary. Get your camera ready, wrap up warm and leave a bit of room in your suitcase so you can bring home something from its Christmas markets.
